2 Judaism Began with Abraham, who was one of the 1st people to believe in one god, even though the society he lived in worshiped many gods. God made a covenant (agreement) with Abraham that he would make him the head of the new nation if he would dedicate himself to the Hebrew people and the worship of one God

3 Judaism The Hebrews lived in an area surrounded by more powerful kingdoms and in BC they were forced into slavery in Egypt. Moses led them out of slavery – this escape is known as the Exodus. Around 1000 BC, more struggles continued and the Jewish people were forced out of their lands around Jerusalem in what is called the Diaspora – or the scattering of Jews to other parts of the world. However, Jews believe that the lands ancient Israel belong to them based on the covenant made with God.

5 Christianity Christianity grew out of Judaism during Roman rule in Palestine. Founding figure: Jesus Lived as a carpenter until he became a teacher and preacher around 30 years old. Followed Jewish law and beliefs, but spoke of a more personal relationship with God. His followers were known as his disciples and they called him the “Messiah,” or savior of man. Roman and Jewish leaders worried about the attention he was attracting Pontius Pilate saw him as a threat to his authority and the Roman Empire Sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion (a form of death where a person is either tied or nailed to a cross).

6 Christianity After his death, followers believed that he was able to rise from the dead. Word of his rising began to spread and his teachings became the basis for Christianity Romans were angry and put many Christians to death. By 300 AD, Christianity had spread to most parts of the Roman world. Roman Emperor Constantine officially ended the harsh treatment of Christians and made Christianity an approved religion.
