Described in ARTICLE II of the Constitution

Role of the Executive Branch
Carries out or executes the laws that have been passed by the legislative branch For example: Congress passes a tax, the Executive Branch collects the tax

Article II, Section 1 The President and Vice President
The head of the executive branch is the president (aka the chief executive) 4 year terms – elected by the Electoral College 22nd Amendment limits the President to 2 terms in office Qualifications 35 years old American born citizen Reside in the United States for 14 years

Article II, Section 1 Electing the President
The president is selected by a group of electors A states electors = the number of Representatives and Senators from that state A candidate for president needs a majority of electoral college votes to win Once elected the president must take the oath of office and promise to “defend the Constitution”

Article II, Section 2 Powers of the President
Carry out laws passed by Congress Commander in chief of the military Make treaties Nominate ambassadors and Supreme Court Justices Organize executive departments Heads of these departments are members of the president’s cabinet (advisors)
