2 Jesus of Nazereth – Birth and life
Born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth Jesus believed to be the Messiah Great leader ancient Jews predicted would come to restore the greatness of Israel Christianity – Jesus’s life and teachings form the basis of this religion

3 Jesus of Nazereth – Teachings
Bible – holy book of Christians Contains the history/teachings of Jesus Old testament = mostly Hebrew Bible New Testament = contents mostly about Jesus

4 Jesus of Nazereth – Crucifixion
Jesus’s teachings threatened Roman authority and officials Why might this be? Romans arrested/executed Jesus by crucifixion Nailed to a cross Cross later became symbol for Christianity

5 Jesus of Nazereth - Ressurection
According to Christian beliefs, Jesus arose from the dead 3 days after execution Met with disciples – taught them to pass on stories and experience to people of the world Disciples – followers of Jesus Afterwards – left for heaven to be with God Resurrection was sign of God’s relationship with Jesus Named Jesus Christ afterwards Greek word Christos = messiah

6 Split from Judaism Build the Third Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-28).
Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel (Isaiah 43:5-6). Usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred, oppression, suffering and disease. As it says: "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore." (Isaiah 2:4) Spread universal knowledge of the God of Israel, which will unite humanity as one. As it says: "God will be King over all the world—on that day, God will be One and His Name will be One" (Zechariah 14:9).

Jesus had many followers from his travels Miracles Event that cannot normally be performed by a human Healing sick and injured Parables Stories that teach lessons about how people should live Two major messages: Love god Love other people

9 Paul (Saul of Tarsus) Never met Jesus, but spread his teachings more than any other Apostle Named a saint after his death A person known and admired for his or her holiness Travelled the world to teach about Jesus Converted many Christians – This is the point where many saw Christianity as a separate religion
