2 Living in a Dry Land Pueblo people lived in the Southwest Desert region Mostly hot and arid (dry), village way of life & farming Irrigation was used in order to farm corn, beans, squash, and cotton Irrigation is building a system of ditches to bring water to an area Pueblo: farmers (Hopi & Zuni) Apache: hunters Navajo: sheep raisers

3 Pueblo villages resemble, or look like, an apartment building
Defend against enemies Both men and women had shared power in the Pueblo way of life: Hopi men governed the villages Women owned the property and passed it on to daughters They also shared the weaving Men: cloth Women: baskets

4 The Need for Rain Rain was the one resource that was always needed in this region Kachinas were believed to be able to bring it and other aid Kachinas are spirits Kachina dolls were used to teach Hopi children about their religion and beliefs Special dances were also used to bring aid to the Hopi people

5 The Hopi Today The Hopi still live on their land today
Over 7, 000 live on reservations in NE Arizona The Hopi like to incorporate, or include, old ways of life with the new ways of life Tradition + Modern life = Hopi people
