Thursday, October 25th, 2018 Aim: How can we shape and present our arguments about Hester’s role in The Scarlet Letter? Agenda Do Now share out: turn and talk; captains share with whole class. Speed Debating: Students will prepare at least THREE key points and evidence to support their argument on the following question: Is Hester a strong female character? Students will pair up in a speed debating format in the classroom. Team A will present their argument that Hester is a strong female character in the novel. Team B will present their argument that Hester is not a strong female character in the novel. Then, both Teams will attack the other side. One minute per team’s argument. Then, rotations will occur. At the end of the speed debating rounds, students should have produced ONE full page of notes on Hester’s role in The Scarlet Letter. Reflections: What important skills did you acquire (or sharpen) in presenting and attacking arguments in our speed debate? How did today’s speed debating help you better understand Hester’s role in The Scarlet Letter?
