1 Critical Approaches to Creative Media
By Eoin Kenny

2 Introduction When considering making a movie, media companies will do a lot of research before deciding to go ahead. This is because making movies is very expensive and risky. So they would do a lot of the investigation and raise funding for the film. There are different kinds of research and in this assignment, I will be talking about three of them. In this power point presentation I will also talk about a movie called “The Martian” and I will also talk about the budget, Qualitative audience research, Box office, IMDB etc.

3 Focus Group As a person who has to do the research in the company, I would be interested in learning more about what my focus group likes to watch, so I would ask them what movies they had watched in the last six months. This would tell me what kinds of movies people are watching and help me understand their likes and dislikes.

4 Psychographics Before I create a new movie I would use a technique called "Psychographics" The main purpose is to find out, what the targets audiences interests are, this will include opinions, lifestyles, interests, etc. I would also create a questionnaire where I would ask members of the public to fill it out. When the questionnaires have been completed, I would be able to create a movie.

5 Secondary Research Secondary research is about using research carried out by other organisations like BARB. They monitor how many people are watching TV programs, they would also publish their data on their website. I will be able to see what TV shows are popular as well. I would also look at a website called "Rotten Tomatoes" because that website allows people to review movies. When a new movie is in cinema, the website would monitor the movie and publish the movie's profit as well. The movie called "La La Land." made a profit of $140,949, The magazine Variety has recently stated that La La Land may actually save the musical genre of movies because it has been so popular.

6 Product study (Target Audience)
As the studio created "The Martian" movie, they decided that they will target people who like space, science, and survival, the age group will be people who are aged 12 and up. I will also talk about some of the techniques that the studio used for this movie as well. In this presentation, I will also provide a diagram where it shows you how many people watch this movie.

7 Budget and The Box Office (Profit)
When the movie was in cinema (opening weekend) a website called ”The Box Office” would monitor how much profit the movie got from the public, they would also publish the data on their website as well. I also provided a diagram where it shows you that the movie made $54,308,575. The movie also made $630,161,890 worldwide. The “box office” web page also provides a diagram where it will show viewers how much profit the movie is getting, monthly and it will also provide a chart.

8 Box Office monthly Chart

9 IMDB (The Internet Movie Database)
When a new movie (Beauty and the Beast) is in the cinema, studio companies can go onto this website and see how popular the movie is with audiences. The web page will also provide a diagram where it will provide breakdown of the viewers who voted for the film. The diagram shows you how many males, females and age group of the audience that rated this movie. The web page will update their web page daily as well. The web page also allows people to a write their own review. I will also provide the diagram where it shows you how many people have voted

10 The diagram is to give you an idea how many people went to see this film. The diagram also shows you that more males went to see this movie, then females. It also shows you what age group went to see this movie as well. There could be a lot more females and people under age of 18 went to see the film, then this diagram shows.
