The idea that States had the right to control all issues and laws in their state not specifically given to the federal government. Used to nullify federal laws that southern states did not agree with. A leading cause of Civil War. Secession=1861. Leads to the creation of the Confederate States of America.

3 State’s Rights and Reconstruction Amendments = Key 20th Century Amendments
Nullification Crisis In 1832, South Carolina threatened to secede (withdraw) from the United States (Union) if the federal government tried to collect Tariff duties (taxes on imports) in their state. South Carolina used the doctrine of states rights to try and nullify (ignore) the tariff law. President Andrew Jackson got Congress a law saying that he could use the army if necessary to enforce the tariff law. South Carolina backed down from their threat to secede and a compromise tariff bill was passed.

4 Amendments passed After Civil War
The Civil War: Reforms and Key Inventions Amendments passed After Civil War 13th Amendment = declares slavery illegal in the United States.

5 Amendments passed After Civil War
State’s Rights and Reconstruction Amendments = Key 20th Century Amendments Amendments passed After Civil War 14th Amendment = gives citizenship rights to all people born or naturalized in the U.S. (i.e. former slaves) and states that citizens cannot be deprived of Life, Liberty, or property without due process of the law”. All citizens will have equal protection under the law.

15th Amendment = prohibits the use of race or previous condition of slavery as a barrier to voting. This applied to male citizens over the age of 21.

16th Amendment = creates the federal income tax provisions. Allowed the government to tax income from whatever source derived. 16th Amendment

8 State’s Rights and Reconstruction Amendments = Key 20th Century Amendments
17th Amendment = Allowed the direct election of Senators.

9 State’s Rights and Reconstruction Amendments = Key 20th Century Amendments
19th Amendment = Susan B. Anthony Provided women the right to vote. (Woman’s Suffrage)

10 State’s Rights and Reconstruction Amendments = Key 20th Century Amendments
24th Amendment = eliminates the poll tax as a requirement to vote.

11 26th Amendment = extends the right to vote to 18 year olds.
