1 The Second Industrial Revolution
Here we go! It’s a new unit! Huzzah!

2 Warm UP Haiti was a colony of France and they had a lot of trade with France. The ideas of the French Revolution, equality for everyone, came over to Haiti. The slaves in Haiti staged a revolt and were successful at overturning the white (French) rulers.

3 Agricultural Revolution
People began to figure out more efficient ways of farming. For example, planting crops in rows so they would be easier to harvest! Who knew??!!! This lead to people have more time on their hands.

4 Second….what about the first??
This “first” Industrial Revolution only happened in Britain. It was on a smaller scale, and involved primitive machines that would weave cloth into textiles much faster than you could by hand. This changed people’s lives because people began to switch from farming to manufacturing.

5 The Second Industrial Revolution
This begins in the mid-1800’s and it involves other European countries starting to “Industrialize.” Besides Britain, Belgium and Germany began to industrialize on the continent. America industrialized over in America.

6 Effects People begin to move to cities (that’s where the jobs were).
People work in factories instead of farms, often in very dangerous conditions Cities began to develop at a rapid pace, which led to problems. Goods were being produced faster and cheaper than ever before. Europe comes to dominate global trade.

7 How did this all happen? Improvements in technology fueled the growth of industry Steel was a “new” product. Before people had used iron Steel is much lighter, harder, and easier to make than iron Cities were built on steel, and steel became the driving force of industrialization.

8 Electricity The first battery was invented in 1800.
In the 1870’s Thomas Edison invented the light bulb The light bulb allowed cities to be more lively at night It also allowed factories to “work around the clock.”

9 Interchangeable Parts
Before factories, goods were made by hand and were all unique. Factories produce interchangeable parts, which made it easier to mass produce goods It also made it easier to repair goods.

10 Assembly Line Factories use this to produce goods quickly and cheaply
Each part of the finished product would have a “specialized” worker Example: Someone would spend all day making steering wheels instead of all day putting the car together himself.

11 Rest of class…. Group it up and exchange your questions with the person you are sitting NEXT TO. Spend 2 minutes answering the questions on the page. Return their sheet to them. Next. As a group, finish the packet. The most challenging piece is the last page. I strongly suggest using a pencil because you will be making mistakes. On the last page you are looking for 4 “headings” and then you are filling in boxes below the headings with terms that would go with the heading.

12 Exit Ticket On a half sheet of paper, answer the following questions….
1. WHY did the Industrial Revolution happen in Britain? Give TWO reasons. 2. List THREE ways the Industrial Revolution changed society.
