Founded by Mark Zuckerberg, was 19 when the site launched, originally as a communication portal for Harvard students. It became an instant phenomenon, spreading to other schools, then to corporations, eventually becoming open to the public in 2006. Although facebook is a social networking site, its roots are embedded in the academic and corporate arena and is a valuable tool for networking. Users can join groups and other users online with similar interests.
