5 Bandwagon Everyone is doing it

6 testimonial Quotations or endorsements which connect a famous or respectable person with a product or item

7 Snob appeal Aims to flatter Suggests that this product/idea is better than others or “ahead of the times”

8 Plain folks Makes leaders or product look like “regular” people (“mom and pop style”) Opposite of Snob Appeal

9 Name calling Links a person, idea, or product to a negative symbol

10 transfer Using images to bring up strong feelings or emotions in order to persuade

11 Loaded words Uses “loaded” words – emotionally charged words, like “new” or “improved” or “best”

12 Glittering (or sweeping) generalizations
Makes an oversimplified statement about a group or product based on limited information

13 Red herring Attempt to distract the reader with details not relevant to the argument
