1 Drawing what you see Looking at any subject and trying to draw it as you see can be difficult. Until you learn a few of the tricks that artists use. One of the tricks is being able to look at a subject and determine the angle of the lines you see in your subject. Use your pencil to figure out the angle. What basic shapes do you see?

2 Left and Right Brain Thinking
Every normal human being has two modes of thinking: The logical, symbol mode and the visual, artistic mode.  Use the right mode for drawing

3 Here are two helpful hints that most artists use:
What time is it? This helps you to determine the angle on an object you are observing Measuring for Proportion This helps you compare the height of the object to its width. Some people measure according to their pencil…

4 Look at the angle of the edge you want to draw.

5 What time is it? Imagine a clock with no hands in front of your subject. Look at the angle of the edge you want to draw. Place your pencil in front of you at arms length Hold the pencil at the same angle

6 What time is it? Imagine this is the hour hand on the clock.
Hold your pencil in front of you at arms length Match your pencil with an angle on the subject Ask yourself: What time is it? Ex. 2 o’clock 12 9 3 6

7 Imagine your pencil as the hand on a clock
Imagine your pencil as the hand on a clock. Look at the angle on the bottle. Ask yourself: what time is it?

8 Measuring Helps to maintain perspective and proportion

9 Measuring for Proportion
Compare size. Proportion: this is the size relationship of one part to another. Compare the height to the width (this is the proportion of your subject). Holding the pencil at arms length take a measurement of the smallest side of the object. Compare this to the other sides of the object.

10 This student has carefully measured and use correct proportion
This student has carefully measured and use correct proportion. As well they closely observed the light and shade on the objects
