1 Matter

2 What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and volume
It occupies space composed of atoms Everything is made of matter

3 A property describes how an object looks, feels, or acts.
Its used to identify a substance

4 Properties Luster- how shiny or it reflects light
Color Odor Luster- how shiny or it reflects light Malleability- able to be beaten into a thin sheet Ductility- ability to be pulled into a wire Conductivity- ability to transfer heat or electricity Hardness- how easily a substance can be scratched

5 Properties Melting Point/Freezing Point- temperature at which the substance reaches the solid and liquid phases Boiling Point- the temperature at which liquid will become a vapor Density- the ratio of mass of a substance to volume Mass- the amount of matter in a object Volume- the amount of space a substance occupies Length- distance between two points Combustibility- ability to burn

6 Identification properties must be used in combination to adequately describe a kind of matter all colorless liquids aren’t water Each type of matter must be described by several properties, both chemical and physical

7 Classification of Matter
To better understand matter we will organize what we know into a chart

8 Not Separated Physically
Matter Mixtures heterogeneous homogeneous Substances Element Compounds Types of Matter Not Separated Physically Separated Physically Different Throughout Same Throughout Only One Type of Atom More than One Element

9 Mixture Made up of more than one kind of matter
Can be separated physically by: Evaporation Filtering Sorting Electric Charge

10 Heterogeneous Mixture
You can see different parts

11 Homogeneous Mixture Appears to look similar throughout because substances are so evenly mixed

12 Substances A single kind of matter Its pure
Has a specific set of properties

13 Compounds a substance made of two or more elements
Cannot be broken down physically Can be broken down chemically

14 Elements A pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance
