3. Panama Canal
1903- Roosevelt and congress bought the Panama route for $40 million from French
Roosevelt Corollary: Addition to the Monroe Doctrine, stating that the United States could intervene to preserve peace and order in the Western Hemisphere and protect U.S. interests
Columbia ruled Panama and US supported a rebellion
Nearly a dozen US Warships were present when Panama declared its independence
US paid Panama $10 million for the land and an annual $250,000 rental for the land

4. Tension with Mexico Texas Revolution (1836)
Mexican-American War (1848)
Mexico’s dictator, Porfirio Diaz, was overthrown by Francisco Madero in 1911 but was overthrown and killed by his own general Victoriano Huerta
American businesses had invested over $2 billion in Mexico and supported Huerta
President Wilson refused to recognize Huerta and supported his rival, Venustiano Carranza, based on his “Moral Diplomacy”
Rebel leaders, Pancho Villa & Emiliano Zapata, refused to support Carranza and attacked/killed US citizens
Wilson sent American troops to track the rebel leaders down but to no avail
