1 Room 23 February 21-24, 2017 Language Arts Important Dates: Reminders
This week we started a new theme, “From Mountain to Ocean.” We listened to the story, Carolinda Clatter! In this story, a giant goes to sleep for a long time and slowly turns into a mountain, but years later a little girl name Carolinda comes along and everything changes. See if your child can tell you the rest! We also had a fun time closing our eyes and picturing ourselves hiking up a mountain, using describing words to help share with our friends what we saw. We reviewed what a personal narrative is and next week will read a story about a little boy and his adventure with Fluffy! We learned three new vocabulary words: slope, mountain, cover Word Study This week we practiced with the long /i/ sound. We reviewed what “magic e” does and practiced with words from word families –ide and –ike. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. They are: like, because, done Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. 2 Alternates for the week:
Social Studies We erupted our volcanoes (a couple of times!) on Friday and it was awesome! Because it was so beautiful outside, we played a Japanese counting game. I said a number in English and students had to jump while counting in Japanese that many times. Science We wrapped up our short magnets unit this week. Students experimented with magnets and learned what objects will and will not attract to a magnet. We discovered what happens when you put the negative sides of two magnets together and tried using the negative sides to push magnets through a maze. Next week: recycling! Math This week we wrapped up chapter 11: Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs. In this chapter, students learned how data is presented in the form of picture graphs, tally charts, and bar graphs. Students also interpreted and made sense of the data from the diagrams. We practiced how to collect and organize our own data, as well. Next week we will start TWO chapters: Numbers to 40 and Numbers to 100. Please review addition/subtraction facts with your child at home as they are going to get much harder! Lunch Menu Next Week Monday: Chicken Nuggets Tuesday: Nacho’s w/ beef Wednesday: Mac & Cheese Thursday: Chicken Patty Friday: Stuffed Crust Pizza Alternates for the week: B) Pizza C) PBJ D) Turkey & Cheese E) Chicken Caesar Salad
