1 Room 23 January 6, 2017 Language Arts Word Study Important Dates:
This week we continued with our theme, Weather Wonders and have been talking about how weather affects our lives. We listened to story about falling snow and read an adapted fairy tale, The Bell in the Well, similar to Cinderella. Our new comprehension strategy that we practiced was monitoring comprehension. Students practiced different strategies to help them understand ideas of the stories that they read. We also learned three new vocabulary words: outdoors, rainfall, drop **Please check my notes on your child’s reading circle ticket and organizers. We are really working on adding more detail to sentences. For example, rather than using a pronoun such as “he,” students should be writing that character’s name to be more specific. Word Study This week we learned all about consonant digraphs. We sang the song “The Digraph Song” and practiced with the digraphs /sh/, /th/, /ch/, /wh/, and /ph/. Ask your child if they can sing the song for you! We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with digraphs. We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. 2 Alternates for the week:
Science We have been continuing with our Rainforest Unit this week. We watched a thrilling movie, Magic School Bus in the Rainforest. We also learned more about the 4 layers of the rainforest: forest floor, understory, canopy, emergent. We talked about the different animals that can be found in each layer and spent a whole lesson talking about rainforest frogs! Keep an eye out next week for more information that will be sent home regarding the fun animal research project your child will be doing! Social Studies This week we started a new unit, Japan! We created a KWL chart and had discussions about facts students already knew, things they wanted to know, and wrote one fact that they learned so far about Japan after watching an exciting introductory movie to the country. Math We started chapter 8: Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20. In this chapter, students will add and subtract within 20 using different strategies, such as grouping into tens and ones, number bonds, and using doubles facts to add and subtract. Please practice doubles facts with your child at home as mastering this skill will really help your child when we learn subtracting with bigger numbers. For example, without hesitation, your child should know 2+2=4, 3+3=6, 4+4=8, etc. We also learned a “Doubles Rap” to help with the memorization of these facts. Your child can also practice this at home to help with the learning of doubles facts.
