Room 23 May 8-12, 2017 Language Arts We started a new theme, Good Citizens. Throughout this theme we will discuss what good citizenship is/looks like, using several books as our mentor. We listened to the story, Little Miss Liberty (Statue of Liberty), about a real person who grows from a baby to an adult. Our story this week was Citizens to Look Up To. In this story, we read biographies about many Americans. Our vocabulary words this week are: knowledge, citizenship, caring Word Study This week learned and practiced with words that contain r-blends gr- and tr-. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We reviewed our new word wall words. once, friend Please practice these at home! Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. 2 Alternates for the week:
Arts Express Week! On Tuesday, Mr. Nate, from The Walnut Street Theater, lead a workshop and taught us all about what it takes to be a good actor. We learned that actors have 3 tools with them at all times: body, voice, and imagination. We used a whiteboard marker to silently act out different objects in front of the class, that students then had to guess which object each student was pretending to use. Social Studies We went on a safari! We took a look at animals in Africa that live in the 3 vegetation zones: desert, rainforest, savannah. Students then wrote a fact about their favorite animal from each vegetation zone. Math This week we ended Chapter 15: Calendar & Time. We continued practicing telling time to the hour and half hour. We reviewed how to read a calendar as well. Please practice reading a clock with your child at home! We have been using the terminology, “half past __” and “__ o’clock” while also learning to read time on an analog clock. Next week: money!
