1 ON PAGE 45: Unit 2 Essential Question: How has life changed as a result of the Industrial Revolution? You don’t need to answer this question. Just write it. The purpose of the unit is to have an answer at the end. After you write the question make a small drawing of what life might be like today without the Industrial Revolution.

3 Factors of production:
SYB # 9 (PAGE 47) What do you need in order to produce something in order to sell it? (anything: a tractor, a plastic toy, bananas, a puppy to sell at a pet store, a restaurant, a factory, artwork, etc.) Welcome to Economics! Factors of production: Capital (wealth, resources) Entrepreneurs: people willing to take a risk to try to make something new (in order to profit) Land: natural resources Labor: people to work

4 Get Ready… What was the Industrial Revolution? 0.25 EC (HW GRADE) What did it allow people to do? 0.25 EC (HW GRADE) How did it change how populations settled? 0.25 EC (HW GRADE)

5 What was the Industrial Revolution?
Transition from an agrarian (farming) society into and industrial one. Meaning the economy is reorganized for the purpose of manufacturing Pre IR: Ninety percent (90%) of the world’s population had to work full-time at farming, spinning thread for cloth, and other repetitive manual jobs to produce food, clothing and shelter for everyone. IR: Use of industrial methods of production and manufacturing. - mass production - machines - factories

6 4 Major things lead to and help the Industrial Revolution grow:
Urbanization: people moving to the cities looking for jobs 1. Agricultural Revolution 2. Natural Resources (from the earth) ie: coal 3. Inventions 4. Capitalism New sources of energy Faster and more efficient ways to produce and transport goods Economic system that encouraged people to seek profits through innovation

7

8 Subsistence Farming Growing only enough crops for your family/village to live off of. 2 things happened that began to change this…

9 What encourages changes in Agriculture production?
Population grows a lot Need more food! French Blockade (France stops trade with England) Need to figure out ways to produce more at home. Can you name the program set up by Napoleon? (EC!) Continental System

10 Agricultural Revolution (Developments in Farming set the stage for the industrial revolution)
Enclosure Movement: Wealthy land lords bought up village farms land and fenced in their land. Results: experimented with new farming technology Small farmers must work for landlord or move to city

11 Seed Drill Example of scientific farming…you have notes on it. One major significance: it is still one of the most widely used agricultural tools today about 300 years after it was greatly improved upon during the Agricultural Revolution *Draw a picture of what you think a farm would look like after getting a seed drill

12 Crop Rotation: changing which crop grows on which field – saves the soil & increases production = more scientific farming. Significance to you today: have you heard of organic foods? Scientific farming was the beginning of the end of all food being organic food.
