Section C Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wanted to take World History on the AP level. It was the only available History class at my school that granted college credit. I signed up for AP calculus and it was important for me to take the class and the only period that would fit into my schedule had a DL set up. I thought I would enjoy learning about psychology as well as the opportunity to meet students from other schools . I like learning in the DL room. There weren’t enough people who wanted French IV in our school to have a teacher teach it, Distance Learning was the only way I could take this class. I needed to take a psychology class for my chosen career and I wanted the opportunity to participate in a DL class. I wanted to take a math class, it counted for 3 college credits. I didn't know it would be in the DL lab but I'm glad it was. I thought it would be a good experience and I was pleased at the idea of meeting new students. I enjoyed the first two times that I had class in Distance Learning. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Section C Student Comments Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They wanted AP or college credit. They wanted to try something different. They were interested in meeting new students. They were interested in the technology. Section C Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I enjoyed being able to learn with other students from other schools and I enjoyed being introduced to another teacher. The friendliness of everyone, the subject, the interactions between people. I liked the technology of sharing a classroom with students from another school and I liked meeting new people. I liked that we were able to talk with other students and get their input. I liked the projects we did and how [many] hand-on activities there were. I liked the environment. It’s an atypical setting, you get to see what other schools are like and have many resources available. I liked that if you missed a class they could tape the class and get the whole thing and everything you miss. It was a good and different experience, a good way to become familiar with other techniques of learning. I like the way that it's like a normal classroom and the teacher is in front of the room, but they are really miles away. I liked the ability to use technology in this manner that was effective and interesting. I really liked the teacher. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. A new experience working with the advanced technology. Interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The teacher or teaching assistant. Section C Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Sometimes it was difficult to hear others due to echo and or volume control. Sometimes the other rooms would have their volume up too loudly. Occasionally the sound system did not work properly. Although I think Mrs. --- is a good teacher, I felt like she highly favored the other class. The teacher tended to look at the class that he was in before looking on the screens to see if another school had a question or had an answer. It can be distracting when papers are shuffled near the microphones and it makes loud noises…tapping and loud noises, other class talking when we were taking tests. Some of the kids were really annoying and you could always hear their conversations. Sometimes we were not included in the lesson. Their class started 5 to 10 minutes before us and ended 5 to 10 before we did. Sometimes it was frustrating not being able to have the opportunity to talk after school. 19 Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students:
Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone/camera positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. Lack of extra help or lack of one-on-one with the teacher. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Section C Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wouldn’t change it . It's a nice opportunity to have this program available. Easier volume control for the host teacher. Sometimes there would be issues with static and echoing. The microphone my teachers has was full of problems but it was fixed. Improve the network to eliminate technical problems. Teacher should have students meet and should go to the schools a few times. The host teacher should pay attention to everyone equally and have extra help times set up after school. I would suggest having the students converse more with the other sites to make them even more comfortable. I would try to decrease the time delay between schools with different schedules if at all possible. Room aides should exercise more control over their students. 21 BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support
Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. More discipline to deal with disruptive and disrespectful students. Set up some system of extra help classes after school. Note: Comments indicating that a student did not feel any changes were necessary were more frequent than any of the categories above. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Section C Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It surprised me that the teacher cared more about all the students than he did himself. I didn't think it was going to feel as normal as it did, as if you were in an actual class room. I thought it would be awkward with another class form somewhere else but it wasn't. That it wasn't difficult at all to interact with the other schools and develop camaraderie. I could actually pay attention to the teacher even though she was on a television. How easily accustomed you become to learning through the program. How it worked in general, I found it very interesting that we could see and interact with people in other cities. Nothing surprised me, I've taken DL classes in previous years. Nothing, it didn't seem any different than a normal class. The behavior of students when the teacher is not paying attention. It was hard for me to get used to watching ourselves and the other schools during class. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

23 BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support
Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. An appreciation for the advanced technology. Little or nothing surprised me. It was harder or in someway less than what was expected. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Section C Student Comments 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host Sites Receive Sites I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. Section C Student Comments (If you answered “No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish he would have made more of an attempt to get to know us. I wish we could have been able to have a time where we could talk to her besides since it is easier to just talk to someone than to wait for their response. I wish he could have acknowledged our school more often. I wish he paid more attention to all the classes equally. I wish the teacher could have kept her website up-to-date and answered her s! I wish our teacher had some easier way to provide extra help. I wish she could have stayed after to help us with our class reading. I wished our teacher could have traveled to his other sites more. 26 Students wished that the teacher would:
Section C Students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate Students wished that the teacher would: Not ignore their remote students or pay less attention to the receive sites. Make some provision for extra help or private communication. Visit the remote students at least once. Only 5.3% of the responses indicated that the students felt their teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations with the system. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Section C Student Comments (If you answered “Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ She was available to come to Warrensburg at any time. Our teacher made efforts such as making a field trip and coming to see us. She came a few times to teach from here and she got us together to get to know each other better. She gave us her and phone number and let us know we could contact her at anytime. He made sure we understood everything and included us in discussions. If there were any problems my instructor and I communicated by which solved any complications that arose. Our teacher and the aide at other site communicated and planned with each other very well. She gave me her address, and personal phone number for any problems I had. When his school was closed he came anyway to help us study. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support
