1 Chapter 15 The Atmosphere

2 Chap 15, Sect 2 (Atmospheric Heating)
Objectives: Describe and show an example of conduction, convection, and radiation. Explain the relationship between the greenhouse effect and global warming.

3 Radiation - transfer by electromagnetic waves
Conduction - transfer by direct contact Convection - transfer in fluids by circulation

5 The Greenhouse Effect Global Warming gases (CO2 and
water vapor) absorb thermal energy and radiate it back to Earth this process reminds us of an actual greenhouse an increase in average global temperatures greenhouse gases in the atmosphere VS.

6 Effects of Climate Change
Global Warming Current research shows that 81 to 100 percent of climate scientists believe that global warming is caused by human activities. Climate 101 Interesting Debate (the views expressed in the video might be perceived as controversial – since politics is involved. This video simply represents both sides of the issue, in order to provide a global perspective for students) Effects of Climate Change

7 Energy from the sun is the driving force behind the water cycle, which contributes to create Earth’s weather. The greenhouse effect is Earth’s natural heating process. Increasing levels of greenhouse gases could cause global warming.
