1 DIRECT and INDIRECT QUESTIONS

2 DIRECT QUESTIONS WH QUESTIONS SUBJECT QUESTIONS OBJECT QUESTIONS YES/NO QUESTIONS

3 Direct questions Subject questions: When the question word is the subject of the sentence. Who dropped the glass? Who will read the book? Object questions: When the question word refers to the object of the sentence. What did you drop? What book will you read? QUESTION WORD + MAIN VERB? QUESTION WORD + AUX + SUBJECT + MAIN VERB?

4 Prepositions in questions
When a question word is the object of a preposition, the preposition usually comes at the end of the clause, especially in an informal style. That is why we often put a preposition at the end of a question. Who are you talking to? What are you looking at? Short Questions: common in conversation. I’m going out. Where to? Who with? I didn’t go to the party. How come? I need a paintbrush. What for?

5 INDIRECT QUESTIONS WH QUESTIONS Change the word order YES/NO QUESTIONS Use IF

6 Indirect questions We use them to ask questions in a more polite way or for very personal questions. We need an opening phrase. Could you tell me…? Do you know…? I was wondering… Do you have any idea…? I’d like to know… Would it be possible… Is there any chance…

7 Indirect questions WH Questions: D: When does the train leave?
I: Could you tell me WHEN THE TRAIN LEAVES? D: Why did she arrive late? I: Do you have any idea WHY SHE ARRIVED late? OPENING PHRASE + SUBJECT + MAIN VERB?

8 Indirect questions Yes/No Questions: we use if. D: Do you like pizza?
I: Can I ask you IF YOU LIKE PIZZA? D: Is Mary single? I: Do you know IF MARY IS SINGLE? ONLY USE QUESTION MARK IF THE OPENING PHRASE CONTAINS A QUESTION: I was wondering if I could borrow your car. I would like to know if I passed the exam.

9 Activities Did she go out last night? What does your mother do?
Who are you? Is she interested in a new job? Why did you buy ten bottles of vodka? Which colour do you prefer? Have you finished your homework?
