Which questions are statistical, which questions are not statistical? Be sure to explain your thinking. How many pets does each person in your class own? How old is the painting, ‘Starry Night’? How many candy bars were sold this month? How many boxes of candy did each student sell?

4 Language Objective By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of reading and writing to communicate the academic math language of statistics. They will be able to create a statistical question so that they can complete a statistical project by collecting data to analyze and summarize. They will show that I understood it by by working with their groups to successfully create our own statistical question and their own data collection tool with 100% accuracy. Academic Math Language Vocabulary: statistical question, data collection, graphs, variability centers- mean, mode, median, range, MAD.

5 Developing a Statistical Project
Over the next few days, you will be working in a small group to apply the skills you have learned from statistics to create and implement your own statistical project. Your group will: Create a statistical question. Determine a data collection tool. Gather the data using the collection tool from at least 50 students. Organize the data you have collected and graph the data in at least 2 different ways. Utilize the graphs to answer your statistical question. Create a visual (poster) that includes your statistical question, graphs, measures of center and variability (mean, median, mode, MAD, range) Prepare a presentation

7 Statistical Question Create a statistical question with your group.
Think about how to collect the data, are you going to be surveying the students or are you going to be measuring things to collect the data?

9 Data Collection Tool With your group, you must:
Create a data collection tool If you are creating a survey, you need to develop your survey question and create a way to collect/organize the data (tally chart, frequency table, spreadsheet, etc.) by providing a written description of what you are going to collect and how you are going to collect it. If you are gathering data through measuring something, you need to provide a written description of what you are going to measure and how you are going to measure it.

10 Collecting the Data Working with your groups you will need to start collecting data from people in your class using your data collection tool. Tomorrow you will collect the remaining part of your data and start to organize it.
