2 The Liberator was printed in Boston Spread the word of the abolition movement in the North

3 FREDERICK DOUGLASS – an ex-slave who was an emotional and eloquent abolitionist speaker Frederick Douglass

4 Douglas was a passionate speaker and wrote several books that convinced people to be against slavery.

5 HARRIET TUBMAN – a former slave who helped large numbers of slaves to freedom through the underground railroad. They called her “Moses” Harriet Tubman

6 UNDERGROUND RAILROAD – a network of people that helped runaway slaves reach freedom in the North

7 THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

8 Cotton trade in the South– The main reason why the south had slavery was due to cotton. Cotton was the #1 cash crop in the south and it required slave labor.

9 Cotton in the North– Cotton was also important to the North too. Factories in the north spun the raw cotton into cloth. Cloth manufacturing was one of American’s top businesses.

10 Role of the Federal Government in Slavery– The Federal Government banned the slave trade in 1807. The Missouri Compromise kept slavery out of the western territories.

11 Role of States Rights in Slavery– The Southern States felt it was their right to own property, including slaves, and that the federal government could not take that away.
