4 Common misunderstandings
Assuming others have the same values and beliefs about the world Equating race with culture (using only appearance to assume cultural background) Believing one’s own culture is the best Believing that cultural neutrality is good enough Relying on professional competence alone The checkbox approach San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training @2018 IRG.

6 Critical self-reflection
When I am about to interact with an Indigenous person, what stereotypes do I hold? Have I acted on assumption, or did I ask my client to learn more about his/her perspective? Do I challenge the assumption of status quo? Do I demand a western- based scientific evidence-base model and perspective, when my client may not? Do my judgements of others affect how I listen to them? How would I know? Do I seek the perspective of my peers and clients on my cultural competence? Am I ready to learn more, to do better? @2018 IRG.
