Another great gold- trading empire from to the 1500’s when Portuguese arrived
Started to control the government
GZ: For some unknown reason was abandoned, think maybe cattle grazing had ruin the grass and over farming ruined the soil
ME: Thought made to replace GZ. Decline began when the Portuguese arrived and started to control the government.

6. Who are the Boers?
The Boers- the Dutch moved into South Africa to be farmers.
Arrived in 1600s
Their descendants became known as Afrikaners
Defeated by British in the 1890s, Won during Boer War
Dutch arrived in the 1600s
South Africa: region won by the British during the Boer War

7. What is apartheid?
Apartheid- 1948, South Africa creates a policy of complete separation of the races
Banned social contact between Blacks & Whites
In 1948, complete separation of races
Dutch were strong supporters of apartheid

8. Apartheid-continued Established separate neighborhoods, & schools
Blacks were 75% of population, yet received little land to live on

9. Nelson Mandela
Emerged as one of the leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1949
Led struggle to end apartheid
Imprisoned for 27 years
Later became S. Africa’s president
Why was he imprisoned? 1963, tried and convicted for high treason. Crime: Plotting a revolution to overthrow the government.
He was actually trying to get equality for all races in South Africa.
Died December 2013 of a respiratory infection.

10. Economic Growth
Many countries of South Africa are growing economically
Tremendous division of wealth between Blacks & Whites
Mostly White communities are more technologically advanced and developed, have better sanitation, and have more space
Mostly Black communities are less developed, have poor sanitation, and are overcrowded
