NAME THE FOUR BOOKS OF THE GOSPELS
The first four books, called “Gospels,” are separate accounts of the life and death of Jesus Christ. Generally, these books emphasize Jesus’ teaching, the purpose of His appearance on earth, and the special significance of His death, rather than just the historical facts of His life. This is especially true of the fourth book, the Gospel of John. The first three Gospels are very similar in content. In fact, much of the material in one is found in one or both of the others. There are differing points of emphasis in each one, however, and each writer seems to have been addressing a different audience, with perhaps a different goal or goals in view.

BOOKS OF THE GOSPEL WRITTEN BY?
MATTHEW: Written to a Jewish audience, this Gospel links the Old and New Testament. It presents Jesus as the Messiah and King promised in the Old Testament, Matthew emphasizes Jesus’ authority and power. MARK: Mark probably had business skilled, practical Roman readers in mind. His Gospel stresses action and gives a straightforward, blow-by-blow account of Jesus’ work on earth. LUKE: A doctor, Luke was also a fine writer. His Gospel provides many details of human interest, especially in Jesus’ treatment of the poor and needy. A joyful tone characterizes Luke’s book. JOHN: John has a different, more image forming style than the other Gospels. Its author selected seven signs that point to Jesus as the Son of God and wove together everything else to underscore that point.

MATTHEW, MARK, LUDE & JOHN TELL ABOUT?
JESUS’ BIRTH, LIFE, DEATH & RESURRECTION Each of the four Gospel writers told the story of Jesus but each man told it in his own way. By reading all four Gospels, we can get a more complete picture of what God’s Son was like when He lived on earth. Matthew had Jewish readers in mind when he wrote his book. He showed that Jesus was the Messiah King because He fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. Mark thought about people who had power, like the Roman rulers in Israel. Hew wrote that the most powerful One of all, Jesus, came to help people. Mark emphasized Jesus’ actions. Luke wanted his Greek friends to know that Jesus was God and man. He gave many details about Jesus life. John’s Gospel is a little different from the other three because he wrote mainly about Jesus’ thoughts and prayer. John wrote to people everywhere, to help them understand the ideas that Jesus taught.

TELLS ABOUT JESUS’ BIRTH
Matthew 2 and LUKE 2 Both Matthew and Luke list the family members who came before Jesus. Matthew shows that Jesus was related to Abraham, King David, Ruth and others. Luke traces Jesus’ ancestors all the way back to Adam, the first man. Jesus Christ came from a family filled with a variety of people, some good and some not so good. The Gospel writers wanted to show that God used all kinds of people to bring His Son into the world. God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary, a young woman who lived with her parents in Nazareth, a small town in Galilee. Mary was frightened when she first saw the angel, but Gabriel said, “Fear not, Mary, for God is pleased with you. You will have a son and His name shall be Jesus. He will rule over the people of Jacob forever.”
