2 It is very important for us as Catholics to have a basic understanding of the Bible. The Bible is the most popular ‘selling’ book in the world. We refer to the stories in the Bible as Scripture (Scripture means sacred text) It is a book that reveals the origin, mission, and destiny of man.

3 It is a Library made up of 66 Books. There are approximately 773,692 words in the entire Bible. About 40 writers were involved It covers more than 1,600 years of history, though it is not a history book

4 The Bible breakdown… The Bible is not a novel. It’s a collection of writings that were written by various people of God over the centuries. Some of the Bible writings are recorded history… Some are actual poetry or songs… Some are actual prophecy… Some are actual letters… Some books are very long… Some are very short…

5 O A long time ago, certain people decided to arrange the Bible by grouping similar books together as follows: The Old Testament The New Testament The focus of the New Testament is the teaching and resurrection of Jesus. The focus of the Old Testament is the development of the Jewish nation – Israel

6 The Old Testament Books Moses wrote Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy Books the record the history of the Jewish people Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Kings, Chronicles, Nehemiah Poetry and Wisdom type Books Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon and Lamentations Books by the Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos…

7 The New Testament The Gospel accounts of the Life of Jesus Matthew, Mark, Luke and John The History of the Early Church Acts Letters written by Paul Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians… Letters written by others Hebrews, James, Peter, Jude… Final Prophecy Revelation
