5 Summary Review The Industrial Revolution resulted in a massive change to the U.S. economy. The switch from handmade to machine-made goods resulted in mass production and ultimately cheaper products for the public. Beginning in England, the Industrial Revolution eventually made its way to the Northeast region in America. Stimulated by the Embargo of 1807, as well as the War of 1812, shippers & traders needed an alternative source of income and began to build the nations first factories. The earliest factories worked in textiles and were located in Lowell, Massachusetts. Employing mostly young women and girls, working conditions were difficult and often unsafe. Workers attempted to fight back against poor working conditions & wages, but were usually fired after striking. The situation was much different in the South as they based their economic system on agriculture. The invention of the cotton gin greatly expanded cotton cultivation as well as the need for slaves.
