2 Key Terms Powhatan empire

3 History On December 6, 1606 three ships sent sail: The Susan Constant, The Godspeed and The Discovery. They settled in Jamestown, Virginia named after their King, James I. By 1608 Captain John Smith became the colony’s leader, establishing a no work, no food policy. In 1914 Pocahontas and John Rolfe married, an important step towards re-establishing positive relations between the colonists and the Indians. Relations started to sour and in 1622 war began, the fighting didn’t end till 1632.

4 Government Jamestown was originally a charter colony and was governed by a group of seven, with one serving as president. On May 24, 1624, the Virginia Company's charter was revoked by King James I due to overwhelming financial problems and politics, and Virginia became a royal colony. It remained a royal colony till the Revolutionary War.

5 Economics Tobacco was grown on the streets of Jamestown
Jamestown was growing which meant more people were working and more people were spending money Tobacco became Virginia's first valuable export They also Traded lass beads and copper to the Powhatan Indians in exchange for desperately needed corn

6 Population/Demographics
The population in Jamestown was 30,345. The median age in Jamestown is 37. In Jamestown 91% speak English and 7% speak Spanish.

7 Culture the Powhatans, the English and the Africans.
The first women to foster stability in Jamestown was not an english women but a native Virginian. Women created a sense of stability in the untamed wilderness of Virgina. There were four boys in the very first group of 104 Jamestown settlers. The first four boys were servants to gentlemen. Children’s toys were mass-produced in Europe as a secondary business. for most manufactures, later on when toy making became a specialty.

8 Native Americans Most tribes part of the Powhatan Empire.
Pocahontas married John Rolfe to try and bring peace. Anglo-Powhatan War which lead to many tribes being wiped out around Jamestown. The Powhatan tribes helped keep Jamestown from starvation when it started off. Gave valuable information Indian massacre- 350 died on surprise attack on colonists.

9 Key People and Events Indian massacre- surprise attack on Jamestown killing 350 people that was planned by Opechancanough. Anglo-Powhatan War- war between Jamestown and the Powhatan Empire. John Smith- One of the first to settle in Jamestown. Chief Powhatan- leader of the Powhatan Empire. Pocahontas- the daughter of the chief who married John Rolfe.
