1 The Bumpy Road to Success
Robison Elementary

2 What did bus training look like before?
School resource officer and counselor One bus/driver 200 referrals

3 Our trip began, with some big bumps in the road….

4 We’d like to try something new! Please join us to discuss!
The Response…

5 They didn’t even eat our donuts…
“You want me to do WHAT!?!?!?!” “They should just be able to behave!” “You have to understand, I am not a teacher, I am not their parent, I am not a counselor, I am not a nurse, I am not a behavior person. My ONLY job is to drive that bus!” They didn’t even eat our donuts…

6 And then...some buy in. We gave value to their input
We will make everything We will keep track of everything We will DO EVERYTHING All we need you to do is TRY! We gave value to their input What are you seeing as the biggest issues What do you want to see improve

7 Resources T-Chart Noise Level Sign Rubric Expectations Poster
Card Colors Present Driver Folders

8 Kick Off Assembly: THE BUS
What if you could be earning points on the bus? Competition amongst busses Everyone motivated because each bus will earn reward once they make it to the finish line Explain point system and how to display daily points earned, explain driver display on the bus

9 Presenting to the students….
Teachers were provided with a printed lesson plan and a slideshow to introduce to the students.

10 Bus Behavior At Robison
How to Be a Bison on the Bus

11 “Today we are going to learn the bus procedures that describe being a BISON by being ready, being respectful, and being responsible on the bus so that everyone can get to and from school safely.”

12 Signs you may see…. 2 points 1 point 0 points 3 points

13 Today you will learn how to:
Wait for your bus quietly Load the bus in a level zero line Sit back to back, bottom to bottom in your seat Listen to the bus driver and follow directions Use level two voice, kind words, and manners on the bus Why do you think it is important for Robison students to practice and learn these procedures?

14 #1: Be Ready I know I am ready when:
My bus line is at a level zero while waiting in the hall I show all hallway expectations while waiting and traveling to my bus I am sitting in a straight bus line at a level 2 waiting in the gym I walk to the bus and load the bus in a straight line I sit back to back, bottom to bottom in my assigned seat I remain seated and facing forward the entire trip Add picture of students loading and sitting on the bus

15 #2: Be Respectful I am being respectful when:
I keep my hands and feet to myself in the gym, the hall, and on the bus I speak at a level two voice the entire bus ride My voice is at level zero when my driver makes an announcement I listen to my bus driver and follow his/her directions I use kind words and manners with my peers and bus driver I greet adults and peers with a greeting (“Good Morning”, “Good Bye”, “Hi”) Change picture to sitting on the bus

16 #3: Be Responsible I am responsible when:
I sit with my hands and feet in the seat I choose to sit quietly, maintain a conversation at level two voice, or read I take care of the bus by keeping it clean and damage-free Greet driver (“Good morning,” “Good afternoon”) Add Bison picture

17 Video 1 Now it is your turn to look for others who may or may not be showing Bison behavior on the bus.. Remember, to have Bison behavior individuals must be ready, be respectful, and be responsible! Add non-example video

18 Ready? Respectful? Responsible?

19 TURN & TALK Were people in this video being ready, respectful, and responsible? How would you feel if everyone at Robison acted this way? Pic of shrugging bison?

20 Video 2 Let’s try again to find some Bison behavior.
Remember, to have Bison behavior individuals must be ready, be respectful, and be responsible! Add non-example video

21 Ready? Respectful? Responsible?

22 Were they showing bison behavior by...
Sitting with their hands and feet in the seat?? Maintaining a level zero voice when driver is talking or level two voice during peer conversations.? Following adult directions? Keeping the bus clean and damage-free? Sitting quietly, reading, or conversation at level two?

23 Think-Pair-Share Think about what Bison Behavior looks like and sounds like for buses at Robison Elementary. Tell your neighbor one way a Robison student can “Be a Bison” on the bus.. Raise your hand when you are ready to share. Add pic of Bison

24 Practice time Just like athletes and musicians practice, Robison students must practice Bison behavior! Practice back to back, bottom to bottom Practice sitting/standing in a quiet bus line Practice “zero” for silent signal

25 Practice Our hands Our line is straight. and feet are in the seat.
We are sitting back to back, bottom to bottom Our voices are at a level zero for directions and two for conversations

26 Our bus is on the road to success…
Bus Board…..coming soon! Race to the finish line

27 Bus tickets

28 What kind of incentive can you give to 60 kids, each time they make it to the end of the road?
TRUTH: As students near the finish line…we had to start thinking

29 Incentive

30 Celebrate Success

31 Results so far this year on track to meet or beat last year

32 Complete Mindset Shift
PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE Better communication More specific concerns instead of everyone is out of control Thinking differently What does the student need? Is there something else going on? Not “They just don’t want to behave” No more mountains of bus referrals that principal can’t keep up with

33 What they are saying now
They figured out how to get all their kids to behave on the bus! When are we getting that program? ~field trip driver I have to say my kids are doing well. They are not even running out!

34 Where do we go from here? Streamline daily reporting - use technology
Plan for substitute drivers Keeping incentives fresh Someday getting the drivers to pass out bison brags?!?!
