1 Measurement English System Metric/SI System 1/18/2019

2

3 Base Units Length: meter (m) Volume: liter (L) Mass: gram (g)

4 - developed in the late 1700’s
Metric System - developed in the late 1700’s - based on multiples of ten

5 SI System - known as the International System of Units
- developed in 1960 as an improved version of the metric system

6

7 Common SI/Metric Prefixes

8 Length Base Unit = meter (m)
What tool is used to measure length in the metric system??? Meter stick

9 How big is a meter? One meter is about the height of a doorknob.
Approximately how tall are you in meters??

10 One centimeter (1cm) is about the width of your little finger or the diameter of an aspirin.
One millimeter (1mm) is about the thickness of a dime. km hm dkm m dm cm mm

11 One decimeter (1 dm) is about the width of your hand.
km hm dkm m dm cm mm

12 Using a measuring device: Measure the following items: put the measurement in your journal. Decide if you should measure first in meters, centimeters or Millimeters. Length of your chair seat Window Chalk board Smart board Heater Pencil Assignment book ** When complete, convert your measurements so that you have each one in meters, cm and mm

13

14 Volume of a Solid BASE UNIT: cubic meter (m3)

15 Regularly shaped solid (i.e. cube, sphere, pyramid, etc.)
- Use the formula for the object For Example: Volume of a box = length x width x height = x x 2 = 8 = 64 =4 Height =2

16 Irregularly shaped object (i.e. stone, pencil, etc.) Displacement
- Use water and a measuring device (beaker, graduated cylinder, etc.) A. B.

17 Volume of a Liquid Base Unit: Liter (l) 1000mL=1000cm3
Show 1000 ml grad cylinder, and plastic cube and liter bottle as example

18

19 For water: 1 ml =1cm3= 1g 1 L 10 deciliter 100 centiliter 1000 milliliters

20

21 Measuring a Liquid’s Volume
1) Graduated Cylinders 2) Beakers 3) Flasks

22 Using a Graduated Cylinder
You must read the bottom of the meniscus Curved line that forms at the edges of liquid

23 Always Read at Eye Level
