5 Concepts of culture Definition of culture: shared practices, technologies, attitudes, and behavior transmitted by a society Cultural traits: individual elements of culture (food preferences, architecture, and land use) Maps analyze and assess language, religion, ethnicity, and gender Communication technologies such as the Internet reshape and accelerate interactions

Expansion: Contagious, hierarchical, stimulus Relocation Acculturation, assimilation, multiculturalism Cultural hearths Lingua franca Colonialism, imperialism, trade shape patterns and practices of culture

8 Diffusion Expansion: feature spreads through “snowballing”
Hierarchical: spread from high up the chain and then down to lower Contagious: rapid and widespread throughout a population Stimulus: part of it spreads (underlying principle of a characteristic spreads although characteristic failed) Relocation: idea spreads through physical movement from one place to another

9 Globalization The expansion of economic, political, and cultural processes to the point that they become global in scale and impact. Doesn’t matter on state and international boundaries

12 Spread by History COLONIALISM: the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Going to someplace else and making a settlement IMPERIALISM: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Typically done by means of extracting resources, not so much about sending people there TRADE

Essential Vocabulary Assimilation: The process by which a person’s or group’s culture to resembled those of another group. Loss of cultural traits Ex: Native Americans Acculturation: The culture change that comes from blending cultures

Multiculturalism: The presence of several distinct cultural and/or ethnic groups within a society. Syncretism:  the combining of different, often contradictory beliefs, while blending practices of various schools of thought. Ex: Voodoo, combo of Catholic and Caribbean
