1 Science Lab Equipment

2 1. Triple Beam Balance or Digital Scale
Measures the mass of substances or objects Measures in grams

3 2. Graduated Cylinder Accurately measures the volume of liquids The curved water line that occurs due to the attraction between water molecules and the glass walls of a graduated cylinder is called a meniscus The graduated cylinder should be at eye level when reading the scale

4 3. Ruler, meterstick, or tape measure
Measures the lengths of objects. In science, we use the metric side of the ruler. The numbers on the metric side represent centimeters.

5 4. Thermometer M measures temperatures accurately
Celsius and Kelvin scales are used in science

6 5. Bunsen Burner Used to heat substances (with a flame)
Hottest flame will appear blue

7 Used to heat substances using electricity instead of a flame.
6. Hot Plate Used to heat substances using electricity instead of a flame.

8 7. Ring Stand with Clamp and Ring
Holds containers away from a heat source during an experiment

9 8. Test Tube Holds small amounts of liquids and chemicals
during experiments

10 9. Test Tube Holder Safely holds test tubes over heat or away from your body

11 10. test tube rack Holds test tubes during an investigation. (After cleaning, test tubes can be placed upside down to dry.)

12 11. Stirring rods As name implies
Used to mix chemicals and hot liquids together

13 12. Pipets and medicine droppers (eyedropper)
Accurately measures and/or transfers small amounts of liquids

14 13. Forceps Used to pick up small items

15 14. Florence flask Round body Used to hold liquids
Not used to measure accurately

16 15. Erlenmeyer flask Flat bottom Used to mix, heat and store liquids
Used in titrations Not used to measure accurately

17 16. beaker Used to hold, pour, or estimate liquids
Does not measure as accurately as a graduated cylinder or pipette Measures in milliliters

18 17. Funnel Used to pour liquids from one container to another without spilling anything

19 18. Tongs Used to pick up large objects that you should not touch (e.g., hot containers, flasks of acids, etc.)

20 19. Petri dish Used to grow bacteria and other tiny living things
*Also used to hold small amounts of chemicals in order to find their mass.

21 20. litmus paper Used to determine whether a liquid is an acid or a base

22 20. Mortar and Pestle Mortar Pestle Used to crush and grind substance

23 Crucible Used to heat small amounts of a chemical
