3 Movements for Reform There had often been concern about the power of the papacy (Pope) Some were nervous that taking away the Pope’s power would make the policies too secular (not sacred enough) Several organizations within the Church tried to reflect what they saw as the early Christian values Franciscan monks (St. Francis of Assisi) practiced a life of discipline, poverty, and service John Wycliffe of England ( ) questioned whether salvation had to be mediated by the pope

4 Wanted to make the Bible available to all; his followers went on to translate into English
Rulers who saw that these ideas would give them more power, were supportive John Hus (Germany) adopted many of Wycliffe’s ideas Also introduced lay people (ordinary people, not clergy) to services He was condemned as a heretic and burned at the stake!

5 Martin Luther and the Beginnings of Protestantism
Read textbook pages and make notes on what you have read. Also include any questions you have about the Church Time: 15 minutes Homework for Monday: Read pages and make notes on the people and places who continued to impact the Reformation.

6 Luther Watch the film and use the question sheet as a guide. Answer the first 9 questions in point form.
