3. Movements for Reform
There had often been concern about the power of the papacy (Pope)
Some were nervous that taking away the Pope’s power would make the policies too secular (not sacred enough)
Several organizations within the Church tried to reflect what they saw as the early Christian values
Franciscan monks (St. Francis of Assisi) practiced a life of discipline, poverty, and service
John Wycliffe of England ( ) questioned whether salvation had to be mediated by the pope

4. Wanted to make the Bible available to all; his followers went on to translate into English
Rulers who saw that these ideas would give them more power, were supportive
John Hus (Germany) adopted many of Wycliffe’s ideas
Also introduced lay people (ordinary people, not clergy) to services
He was condemned as a heretic and burned at the stake!
