1. INSTRUCTIONS Dear Subject Matter Expert,
Thank you for agreeing to be a Subject Matter Expert for the new online Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) at the Faculty of Medicine. To help you organize your ideas for the content and ensure there is some level of consistency across the modules we have developed this template to help and guide you as you develop your SLM. The programmers at Medtech will use the completed template to create the final online version of your module. They may contact you with questions throughout the programming process to ensure they create the SLM you envision. You can provide any specific programming instructions to them in the notes section under each slide. By using the font sizes and colours presented to you in this template, what you put on each Powerpoint slide will closely mirror what you will see in the final online version. The template starts off with a number of slides requesting specific information about your SLM (e.g., title, acknowledgements, glossary, and learning objectives) before providing you with blank content slides. 45 content slides have been provided – you do not need to use all of them and you can add more if you need them. The SLMs should take around 45 minutes for the students to complete.
In order to make the SLM engaging for the students and facilitate learning, avoid creating an “online textbook” where learners are simply asked to turn “electronic pages”. The Internet affords opportunities to use multimedia to present the content and accommodate different learning styles.
Avoid being text intensive and use bullets when appropriate to present your content.
Take advantage of multimedia opportunities such as images, audio, video, slideshows, animations, interactive activities etc. If you do not have multimedia elements already developed and wish to include them you must submit a request to Medtech to see whether it is feasible to have them developed within the timelines available.
Make connections in the material through hyperlinks and allow the learners to explore the content in a non-linear manner.
Provide the human connection by sharing people’s experiences through audio, video, stories, and/or quotations.

You can insert images in the slides by clicking Insert  Image  From file (NB: these images should also be sent to Medtech as separate files)
You can insert audio and video in the slides (cut and paste these icons to indicate where you want the files located on the page and then send the original audio or video files to Medtech)
