A successful student is…
Someone who… • Sets ambitious targets • Has a balanced life • Manages and plans their time • Seeks support and guidance • Thinks critically • Tutorial Programme • Is adaptable • Has high aspirations
9
Time Management In Year 13, expect to do 5 hours’ work per subject outside lessons each week. Sixth Form Centre – with silent study room. At home, every student needs a place to study undistracted. Work must be paced and to reflect the linear style of assessment. Sixth Form assignments are rarely straightforward overnight tasks. Use of schoology is vital.
10
“But I’ve done all my homework”
Review the work done in a lesson and type up notes Research a topic further using textbooks/ journals/the Internet Study exam questions Practise languages/exercises Develop sketch books

Support High expectations: • Work rate • Meeting deadlines
• Attendance and punctuality Support • Tutor programme • Interim and main reports • Target setting through ALIS and ALPS To provide a formal process for measuring performance To identify potential areas of concern To provide a platform for discussion To encourage improvement

Mental Health and Wellbeing
At Heathside, we put great value on the mental health and wellbeing of everyone in our school community. We strive to promote a school culture where all students, supported by their teachers, can build confidence and flourish. We know that when students are mentally and emotionally healthy, they will have greater self-esteem, form better relationships with family and friends and will be more resilient learners. How to get help and support? 1. Head of Learning and SSCOs - Offer help and can link students to the right source of support. Students can come to Student Services during break and lunch times, before and after school. 2. Student Counselling service - A confidential space for students to talk about their thoughts and feelings. Parents can refer their child by ing Miss Brinson and students can send a message to her on Schoology. 3. Kooth – An online counselling website available to all student in Surrey. Students can log in to access free, safe and anonymous online counselling from BACP accredited counsellors every day until 10pm. Sometimes evenings are busy so it is good for students to log in early to speak to counsellors. The website also has forums, groups and articles: 4. ELSA- Emotional Literacy Support - a 6 week intervention to remove the barriers to learning and help students be happier at home and at school. Heads of Learning and SSCOs can refer students. Year 7 students can also attend confidential drop-in sessions with Mrs Durrant. Students can request an appointment by posting a note in the ELSA post-box outside the ELSA room on the ground floor of the Y Block. 5. GP - A good place to start if you are worried about your mental health or wellbeing. Referrals can be made to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for specialist support by the school and the GP together.

UCAS Key deadlines 2019 entry (dates vary between courses and course providers.) 15 October 2018 Applications for Oxford, Cambridge or most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science should arrive at UCAS by 18:00 (UK time). 15 January Applications for the majority of undergraduate courses should arrive at UCAS by 18:00 (UK time) on this day (check course details in UCAS search tool for the correct deadline). 25 February Extra starts for eligible applicants. 30 June If an application is sent to UCAS by 18:00 (UK time) on this day, they will send it to the chosen universities or colleges. Applications received after this date will automatically be entered into Clearing. 4 July Last date for applicants to add an Extra choice. When your son or daughter ‘sends’ their application it comes through to the school, not UCAS and it then needs to be checked before final submission!
16
UCAS Student finance https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login
Students will need to register with this service Applications are normally started in the new year Deadline for applications depends on the course start date Once students know which university is their firm choice, then they can apply Best to sit down with parents when applying as information on earnings etc. is required
17
Alternative routes Alternatives to UCAS
Look at big employers, such as KPMG for sponsored degree programmes Support with apprenticeship applications, register with Support in the new year with all application types Further education, such as an art foundation or specific level 3 courses (Brooklands, UCA etc.) Job applications and employment, with or without training Lots of excellent schemes, such as school leavers programme, encourage your son or daughter to explore the different options Gap year, lots of excellent organisations
