2 Lesson 38 What are the challenges of the participation of the United States in world affairs?

3 Purpose This lesson highlights some of the aspects of Americans’ participation in the international arena.

4 Objectives Identify the constitutional responsibilities of the three branches of the national government in shaping the involvement of the United States in world affairs. Describe globalization and to identify some of the challenges that globalization poses for citizenship and participation in world affairs. Evaluate, take, and defend positions on issues involving globalization and improving the image of the United States abroad.

5 International Engagement
Thucydides and Machiavelli agreed that strong countries inevitably go to war and will defeat the weak. International relations today involve delicate interactions among all of the independent states How can we help France when their revolutions is so bloody? Who do we help? 6 How the Constitution Provides for the United States’ Role in the World
The need to deal with other nations was a factor for calling the Constitutional Convention, and eventually for our Constitution. Congress is given the power to: Regulate commerce among foreign nations and with the Indian tribes Declare war Raise and support armies and provide for a navy Define and punish piracies and felonies Ratify Treaties

7 How the Constitution Provides for the United States’ Role in the World
The president is given the power to: Negotiate treaties Act as commander in chief Appoint ambassadors, other public ministers, and consuls Receive ambassadors and other public ministers The Supreme Court is given the power to: Exercise original jurisdiction over cases affecting ambassadors, other public ministers, and consuls Exercise appellate jurisdiction over admiralty and maritime cases.

8 International Law The purpose of international law is to create and maintain international order. Often reflects four overarching ideals Equality of sovereign nation-states Noninterference in the affairs of other nations No use of force or threat of force Respect for human rights International law depends on the willingness of nations to obey it.

9 How International Organizations Help to Maintain International Order
After WWI and WWII we (as a world) created a large scale international organization to maintain international order through collective security. Individuals and organizations are not eligible for membership Members of the U.N. are obligated to: Aid member states under attack Promote friendly relations among nations Resolve international disputes peacefully Encourage respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms Provide financial support NAFTA, WTO, NATO

10 How Americans Influence International Relations
Americans indirectly influence American foreign policy and the nation’s international economic decisions Voting, lobbying, and contacting national officials Joining NGOs Traveling, exercising citizen diplomacy, and participating in international education Making informed consumer decisions

Multinational corporations often have budgets bigger than those of some countries countries. Worker migration Capital Information
