A group of people within a larger culture
Some values, norms, language, material objects, use of technology, and behaviors are different from those of the dominant culture
MOST subcultures, however, share many of the components of the dominant culture
A complex society such as the U.S. contain many thousand of subcultures.
Subcultures vary greatly in size.

2. Subcultures and Countercultures
Most individuals are members of several subcultures. You are probably a member of several.
Some subcultures develop components of culture that place them in opposition to the broader society
They may exist in a state of tension or open rebellion.

3. Countercultures
Subcultures that has oppositional components of culture are called countercultures.
Examples include
Criminal gangs
Outlaw biker gangs
Westboro Baptist Church
Cult religions
1960’s drop-out hippies
