Darren Brown : "They should link up the retail park with the town centre, making use of the canal; knock down the multi-storey car park and build shopping and bars along the canal up to Matalan." Anthony Shellshear: "I would make the ring road go around the centre not directly into it, because that's just daft. I would also build another indoor shopping area leading to Westfield Street to include that end of the town as now it gets neglected." Mike McCairn: "Keep the centre for nice shops and restaurants so you can enjoy day and night so friends and families can go out like at Liverpool One." Anne McCormack said: "We have quite a small town centre, but take a look at what Wigan has achieved in their Royal Arcade. Loads of shops on two levels. Our town centre should be able to accommodate something of that size."

18. An Ambitious Vision
St Helens Council has unveiled its ambitious vision for the transformation of the town centre. Part of the proposals include the redevelopment of an area around the Sankey Canal into a “modern waterfront area” complete with bars and restaurants. There’s also an ambition to enrich the borough’s arts and culture offer, with the potential for a dedicated arts and culture centre included in the canal-side regeneration.
If all the proposals suggested within the strategy were to be delivered, it would cost in the region of £300 million to achieve, raised through a combination of both public and private funding streams.
Underused and vacant sites around the town centre boundary including Birchley Street car park and St Helens Central railway station could also be redeveloped as part of the plans. Most of these proposals will gradually roll out over the next 10 years.
