1 Types of Graphs, Constructing Line Graphs
Graphing Notes! Types of Graphs, Constructing Line Graphs

2 Graphs! A graph is a visual picture of data or numbers from an experiment You will be making MANY graphs in this class! Three Basic Types: Pie, Bar, Line

3 Types of Graphs Pie Graph
shows distribution of parts within a whole quantity

4 How to determine pie “slice”
Find the decimal (how many answered out of total asked) 5 out of 15 answered spaghetti as favorite food. 5/15=.33 (33%) Multiply that number by 360 (there are 360 degrees in a circle) .33 x 360 = 118.9 Round to the nearest degree  119°

5 Pie Graph & Protractors
Draw a straight line from the center to an edge of your circle. Line up your protractor on the straight line Find the angle you want Draw the line Use your new line as your starting point for the next pie slice

8 Types of Graphs Bar Graph shows information collected by counting

9 Types of Graphs Dependent Variable Independent Variable Line Graph
shows the relationship between 2 variables X axis: Independent Variable: (what you manipulate) Y Axis: Dependent variable (what is measured/responding) Dependent Variable Independent Variable

10 Independent vs Dependent
Goes on Y axis Y has a vertical line Does depend on other variable It is what you measure in the lab Examples: number of deer, number of students, etc Independent Goes on X axis “X men are independent people” Does not depend on the other variable Manipulated/ Changed Examples: year, time, class period,

11 What are you responsible for knowing?
Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables (& controls) Choose the type of graph that will be the best fit for your data Create a line graph Analyze bar, pie, and line graphs
