Objectives 1-3 1. Identify three types of graphs and explain the ways they are used. 2. Distinguish between dependent and independent variables. 3. Analyze data using the various types of graphs. Vocabulary 1. Data

 Graph- visual display of information or data.  Line graphs  Bar graphs  Circle graphs  Graphs make it easier to understand complex patterns by displaying data in a visual manner.

 They show any relationship where the dependent variable changes due to a change in the independent variable.  Changes over time  More than one event  X-axis is the independent variable  Y-axis is the dependent variable

 A bar graph is useful for comparing information collected by counting.  Bar graph are very useful for comparing different things.  X=IDV  Y=DV

 A circle graph, or pie graph, is used to show how some fixed quantity is broken down into parts.  The circular pie represents the total.  The slices represent the parts and usually are represented as percentages of the total.

 Graphs are a visual representation of data  Scientists often graph their data to detect patterns  The type of graph used is based on the conclusions you want to identify  A line graph shows how a relationships between two variables changes over time  Bar graphs are best used to compare information collected by counting  A circle graph shows how a fixed quantity is broken down into parts
