2 Georgia Milestones 2015 Presented by: Rome City Schools District Data Team

3 There is nothing permanent except change.
-Heraclitus Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts. -Arnold Bennett

4 Agenda Why are we here? Why Milestones? What can we expect?
Achievement vs. Progress What does this mean for my students? What does this mean for me? What does this mean for my school?

5 Why are we here? -Changes -Understanding -Communication -Consistency
We want you to know that we understand things are different and that we are here to support and help you through the change. We want you to understand that these scores will be lower. We want you to be able to communicate this to parents/students and people in the community. This same presentation is being given to every school in the district to make sure that there is a consistent message throughout the district.

6 Why Milestones? In the past, Georgia has set a low bar for proficiency on state testing. Georgia ranks in the bottom of the 50 states of national comparisons on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), ACT and SAT. (Green bars are the national passing rates, blue bars are the old Georgia pass rates.) Georgia Milestones will position Georgia students to compete with peers nationally. Notice that high school math was previously re-leveled (as demonstrated in recent EOCT results) Because there have been low achievement expectations in the past, expect shocking results. Georgia is raising the bar!

7 What can we expect our scores to look like?
Before we look at scores remember that it is- -MISGUIDED and INAPPROPRIATE to compare these to previous years -This is a different test with, different question types and much more rigorous expectations -We are no longer measuring a “pass or fail”. It is about where students are and where we want them to go.

8 ELA Talk about what the four levels mean- Beginning Learner- needs substantial support, Developing- needs additional support, Proficient- are prepared to move forward, Distinguished- well prepared to move forward (at HS and MS discuss how these are changed to grades- Beginning- 0-67, Developing , Proficient , Distinguished )

12 Achievement vs. Progress
In the past we focused on pass/fail. This is no longer the case for the new Georgia Milestones, TKES and the new CCRPI. Achievement is where you are in a moment of time and gives us little information about where students have been or where they are going (or how to get them there). Growth helps us see student over time and helps us re-focus on the individual child and their needs.

13 Old vs. New CCRPI Note the changes in content mastery and progress (which really pulled from all areas) the only thing that really takes into account “pass/fail” is content mastery

14 How do we calculate progress?
To play the video- Click on the words. This will link you to the GADOE page. Click the arrow on the video to play it and make it full screen. When it is done, click escape, then click on the Copy of Teacher Milestones tab at the top to go back to the presentation. We have had student growth percentiles for a little while, but we have not had them be as important. At some point, this is what will be measured for TKES at 50% and LKES at 70%

15 What does this mean for my students?
Be encouraging! Communicate Only give out information when directed (mid-November?) Please be encouraging! NO INFORMATION should be given to students until individual student report sheets are available. Students may be upset when they look at their scores, they will likely be lower than before.

16 What does this mean for my students (cont’d.)
Help them understand- That it is about growth This test was much harder That it’s about helping them move forward Help them understand- That it is about growth This test was much harder and that is why the scores are lower, not necessarily that the student knows less or wasn’t taught well That it’s about looking at their strengths and weaknesses and helping them move forward Students will receive a remediate, monitor or accelerate for each content subarea which will help us determine how to best help them.

17 What does this mean for me as a teacher?
2015 data doesn’t count toward TKES (this year) You will have information that will help you help students grow Additional training on this coming soon! For this year, these scores WILL NOT count toward your TKES evaluation or anything else. You will finally have information that you can actually use to help students grow in your content area. You need to learn to interpret the score reports to determine students areas of strengths and weaknesses and focus on GROWING students toward proficiency. -Additional training opportunities will be coming for this -There will be a webinar on interpreting scores

18 What does this mean for my school?
-Community Conversations -Comparison to State/Regional -District Data Team -Support There will likely be some conversation in the community about these scores (this is a conversation going on nationwide) We will likely still be close to or above State/Local/Regional averages (early scores have shown this) We have a district data team that will be working diligently to analyze, communicate and plan for future growth using this information We will do everything possible to support you, your students and your school to help make sure we all grow together!

19 THANKS! Any questions? (If we run out of time, please enter on Today’s Meet and we will share the transcript of this discussion)
