Women have gradually been professionalized over the 19th and 20th centuries. Because women were excluded from owning land as well as pursuing higher white collar professions, (e.g. doctors, lawyers, etc.) their wage potential has not been equalized with their male counterparts…thus explaining the continued wage gap.

9 Explanations for Women’s Leave of Absence
Women often take prolonged periods of absence from the workforce. There are some tax breaks awarded to families where one spouse continues to work while the other will be filed as a dependant. Paying for expensive daycare can cancel out the lower earning spouse’s wages entirely
