Amendments Changes to the Constitution

2 11th (1795) No State can be sued by a resident of another state or a resident of a foreign country in FEDERAL court. Residents can’t sue home state in FEDERAL court. Ex. I can’t sue the State of ND in Federal Court

3 12th (1804) Election of President and VP on same ballot Creates the ballot we have today Why? (don’t write) Election of 1800 Jefferson vs. Burr People would run for President and top vote becomes President and 2nd place becomes VP. Problem usually from 2 different political parties who have different ideas. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson HATED each other. Same with Jefferson and Burr. Ineffective government- political tensions.

4 13th (1865) Prohibits Slavery and forced servitude
Forced servitude: having to work for X amount of years. Allows some forced servitude Juries, military conscription

5 14th (1868) Citizenship- Born on US soil or off-spring of US citizens.
Anchor Babies (SHOW THESE CLIPS) Terror Babies Due Process Clause- states can’t act in any unfair or arbitrary way Commonly used section for cases Equal Protection Clause- prohibits discrimination against/unreasonable distinctions between persons.

6 15th (1870) Can’t prohibit people to vote by color, race, or servitude. Found other ways to discriminate

7 16th (1909) Creates national Income Tax April 15th
A direct tax, w/o regard to State population April 15th

8 17th (1912) Senators elected by popular vote instead of state legislature In response to HUGE political corruption Senate had become a “millionaires club”

9 18th (1919) Outlaw the sale, production, and transporting alcohol
Consumption was legal Reasons for Prohibition (TEST) Abuse and neglect at home b/c of Alcohol People wasting money and neglecting kids and wife at home Caused fights.

10 19th (1920) Women gain right to vote
Why women didn’t have the right to vote: (Need these for test) Father represented them Husband represented them Not smart enough to handle politics Not a woman’s concern Business feared women would regulate alcohol and child labor

11 20th (1933) Sets date for start of Congress
Moves date of presidential inauguration. Limits time of “Lame Duck Congress” A Congressperson who is defeated in Nov. doesn’t really get much done… Now new people take office in January- before it was March Think a losing football team that doesn’t make playoffs. Don’t try real hard.

12 21st (1933) Repeals the 18th UNDERAGE DRINKING?

13 22nd (1951) In response to FDR’s 4 terms Limits to 2 four year terms.
OR 10 yrs. Max a prez can serve is 10 years If President dies < 2yrs into term VP can only be elected once. If President dies 2 yrs plus 1 day- can be elected twice

14 23rd (1961) Washington DC earns 3 electoral votes for president

15 24th (1964) Prohibits poll taxes at voting places

16 25th (1967) Names VP the President if President can’t service
Allows for temporary transfer of power from President to VP to carry out President action. Ex. Bush had a colonoscopy- Dick Cheney was acting president Gives method to declare president unfit to rule.

17 26th (1971) Voting age to 18

18 27th (1992) When Congress gives itself a pay raise that raise doesn’t take effect until the next election. The

19 13-27 amendments Write the number of amendment Write what each amendment does/means. Draws a representation of what the amendment does.
