1 Conduction, Convection, Radiation, heat and temperature video
Directions: As you watch the video, answer the questions that follow.

2 Conduction, Convection, Radiation, heat and temperature video
1. In the video, they showed a blue bin filled with water and placed a blue cup into the bin of water. Which had more thermal energy, the blue bin or the cup? Why? Explain. (The diagram below is similar) 2. What is conduction? 3. In the video, they show an experiment similar to the diagram below. Explain if they were showing conduction, convection or radiation. 4. Explain what happened in the experiment. Why did the tacks fall off of the metal rod? The bin or tub of water has more thermal energy because it has much more water molecules than the cup. Heat transfer through a solid Conduction- heat transfers through the rod Heat transfers from one end of the rod to the other causing the tacks to fall.

5. Why does a pot have a wooden handle on it? 6. What does a wooden handle and a plastic cup have in common? What are they both called? 7. What is convection? Wood is not a good conductor of heat. It will not aloow heat to transfer through it easily. Both do not allow heat to pass through them easily. Both are insulators. Heat transfer through a gas or liquid.

4 Conduction, Convection, Radiation, heat and temperature video
Cold water Hot water 8. Draw arrows showing hot water and cold water in the pot of water above. 9. Explain why hot water rises and cold water sinks. What process is this called? 10. Draw how a room is heated and cooled by drawing arrows. Hot water rises because molecules spread apart when heated making them less dense so it rises, cold water sinks because molecules move closer together making it more dense so it sinks. Cold Air Hot Air

5 Conduction, Convection, Radiation, heat and temperature video
11. What kind of heat energy does the sun give off? 12. What is radiation? 13. What are some examples of things that radiate heat? Radiation Heat transfer through empty space Heat from a fireplace, sun, light, toaster oven
