Heat Transfer Conduction, Convection, Radiation

Conduction Heat energy can be transferred from one substance to another when they are in direct contact. Conduction is mainly seen with solid objects, but it can happen when any materials come into contact, like when warm air is in contact with your skin.

Hot Fluids What happen to the molecules when you heat a gas or liquid? –They Spread Apart With the molecules spread apart, what happens to the pressure? –It decreases So heat... –RISES!

Convection Hot fluids rise and cool fluids sink, creating a current Transfer heat through a fluid

Convection Hot water rises, cools, and falls. Heated air rises, cools, then falls. Air near heater is replaced by cooler air, and the cycle repeats. What if coils were at the bottom?

Natural Convection Air near ground is more dense than air higher up

Radiation Heat transfer in waves through space

Uses of Radiation Solar cooker

Think 1. When one steps from a shower on a cold morning, why does the tile floor seem so much colder than the air? 2. Place a wooden spoon and a metal spoon in the freezer. Which will cool faster? After several hours, what would they feel like?
