What is listening? Accurate Receiving How does it differ from hearing? Hearing only refers to the physical ability of your ears to pick up sound waves.

4 Listening is a four-step process:
Response Sensing what was said (do I hear it?) Interpreting what was meant (do I understand it?) Examining the statement (how does it relate to me?) Responding to it appropriately (what do I do now?)

5 To analyze (for example, in a class setting)
What are the purposes of interpersonal listening? To understand (can you explain that?) To provide support (I think it’s a great idea… keep it up) To analyze (for example, in a class setting)

6 What are some barriers to listening?
External distractions Internal distractions Your desire to talk

7 Conflicting demands (happen more and more often)
