1 Week 2 Vocab Definitions

2 Hydrolysis A reaction in which a substance is broken down by water Dehydration synthesis A reaction in which two molecules combine to form one larger molecule with the loss of water Enzyme Proteins that speed up the rate of reactions by lowering the activation energy required Nucleic Acid contains the genetic information (DNA & RNA)

3 Buffer Substances that help minimize changes in pH (keeps pH stable). Hemoglobin A protein found in the blood responsible for transporting oxygen Organic molecule Molecules that contain Carbon and hydrogen

4 Carbohydrate Quick energy source and builds structures like cell walls Lipid Long-term energy storage, insulation and water proofing. Includes fats, oils, waxes, steroids... Protein Made of amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
