3 Sociological Perspective Definition
A view that looks at the behavior of groups, not individual people

4 Sociological Perspective What is the statue made of?
What is the statue made of? Bronze What is bronze? Lead, copper, tin Don’t look at the individual but look at the group

5 Sociological Perspective
Not a specific man joins a gang to prove he is tough but men join gangs because they are taught by society to be “masculine.”

6 Sociological Perspective
Helps you see that all people are social beings.

7 Sociological Perspective
Many different perceptions of society. How does a man see the world compared to a woman? An adult compared to a child? Society acts differently on various categories of people. For example child compared to an adult, or man vs. women, rich opposed to poor. The categories in which we fall shape our experiences.

8 Sociological Perspective
Tells you that your behavior is influenced by social factors

19 Sociological Imagination
Individuals are products of their time, their community, and their understanding of the world around them.

20 We experience our lives as one of a kind, but in fact your life is remarkably similar to others in your community.

21 Sociological Imagination
Helps us understand the effects of events, such as social pressure, on our daily lives.

22 Society Deals the Cards
Personal responsibility (i.e. the choices you make) is always a factor in how your life turns out, but choices alone can’t explain your circumstances. The US unemployment rate in 2006 was 4.6% by 2009 it had more than doubled (9.6%). Can this all be explained by bad choices or laziness? Each of us has to play the hand we are dealt (i.e. personal choices), but society is dealing the cards (the social circumstances you are born into).

23 Sociological Imagination

24 Sociological Imagination

25 Sociological Imagination
a vivid awareness of the relationship between personal troubles (what's going on in your own life) and the wider society (factors outside of your control that are happening in the society in which you live).

26 2 Minute Paper p. 5 What is a personal issue or problem you are facing? How is it related to what is going on in the society around you? How can you connect the personal issue with social forces outside of your personal control?
