1 Welcome to the Foundation Stage
Where learning is fun

2 Welcome To give you an overview of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and its curriculum. To have a chance to look around the classroom. To find out how our school day is organised. To understand how you can support your child at home. To discuss the arrangements between now and September. To answer any questions or concerns you may have.

3 Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Making and building relationships Dress and undress independently Manage feelings and behaviour - knowing the difference between right and wrong. To become confident and independent learners.

4 Communication and language
Encourage children to talk and develop conversational skills Develop listening and concentration skills To be able to understand and carry out instructions Sing songs and nursery rhymes

5 Physical Development Helps children understand the importance of good health and staying safe Develops gross motor skills: balancing, travelling, climbing Fine motor skills: pegs, tweezers, sewing, paint brushes, pencils, using scissors Using a range of large and small equipment indoors and out

6 Reading Range of reading books. Listen to stories
Stimulates imagination Develops language and listening skills Prepares children for writing

7 Writing Marks on paper - using letter sounds - write words
Opportunity to copy words, write labels and lists then sentences and simple stories 3 finger pinch grip Correct letter formation

8 How can you help? Read books with your children as often as possible
Make up your own stories Show your child writing for a purpose Writing gobble-di-gook is fine! Encourage children to read back their special writing Give lots of praise

9 Mathematics Practical Indoors and outdoors
Problem solving through talking Building models, making patterns

10 How can you help? Count the stairs going up / down
Count out 4 forks / spoons for dinner How many potatoes on their plate? Talk about shapes of tins, boxes at the supermarket Look for shapes at home and outdoors Cooking Give lots of praise

Explore colour, textures and materials Listening to and making music, singing Develops language, confidence and imagination Use tools appropriately

We have a great time in the forest We go every other Monday We are learning outside The setting is special. Risk taking is facilitated. All weathers and seasons. Learning is play based, child-led and child initiated (all adults must respect this). What is forest school Scandinavian approach to Early Years education Outdoors (not necessarily in Forest) Repeated and regular contact with the natural world. Child-led - Freedom! 16 Learning Journal At St Andrew’s we use Tapestry which is an on-line Learning Journal Secure log on How does it work? How can my child share something special that they have done at home? How can I share the observations with family? Will my child be able to view it at school? What happens at the end of my child’s reception year?

General information Lunches are provided (keep any packed lunches simple) School provides fresh fruit every day for snack Reading Log – 2 way communication Name all items of clothing including shoes, PE kits PE kits need to be in school every day Book-bags fit neatly into trays Back packs not necessary yet! Attendance is really important! Changes – contact details, telephone numbers, allergies If you have any concerns or worries before September or once your child has started school please talk to us. We are happy to help. HAPPY CHILDREN MAKE SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS

19 First few days Be confident and happy when you bring your child into school. Your child will pick up on your emotions: if you appear upset, your child will respond to this. Aim to make a clean ‘break’ when you leave your child – try not to linger and go back to them if there are tears. If your child does cry, this generally only carries on for a few minutes after you have gone. I promise that we will contact you if we cannot settle your child within a reasonable amount of time. There are carefully chosen activities set out for your child to choose from when they arrive.
