2 Warm-up: In your groups of three, answer the question below
If you were in charge of the peace treaty process to end WWI, what would you include? Once everyone is done, we will review everyone’s answers as a class

3 Conflicting Demands: Everyone had demands
1.) Ethnic groups asking for independence in Austria- Hungary and Ottoman Empire Break them up, due to nationalism 2.) Britain and France wanted to make Germany pay for war 3.) Italy wanted territory it was promised for joining the Allies

4 Conflicting Demands: Britain, France, and the U.S. decided everything in secret Some countries excluded Defeated countries were not allowed to participate in the treaty discussions

6 Treaties Created New Nations:
Austria-Hungary was broken up into new nations Ottoman Empire broken-up Turks were in charge of Empire but now control reduced to Turkey Large parts of Middle East divided up between France and Great Britain

7 U.S. Rejected the Treaty U.S does not accept the Treaty of Versailles and does not join the League of Nations Why? Feared the League might pull the U.S. into foreign affairs without Congressional approval

8 Legacy: Creates bitterness and hatred amongst the Germans
Other countries felt cheated and betrayed “Peace built on quicksand”

9 Why did the U.S. reject the Treaty of Versailles?

10 They did not want to be forced into foreign conflicts

11 What will this Treaty lead to???
